Christchurch Hillside Residence
CALDBERG HOUSE
This striking three-level residence, perched on a sloping site in Christchurch, was designed to maximise panoramic views of the city and mountain ranges. The homeowner’s brief was a modern home that embraced the contours of the land while maintaining strong connections to the view on every level.
The design rises from the hillside, stepping up naturally with the terrain. The ground floor anchors the home and provides a practical base, while the main living level above opens directly onto a generous deck cleverly positioned atop the garage roof, transforming an otherwise challenging space into valuable outdoor living. A sheltered deck off the kitchen offers a private and protected space for entertaining. On the uppermost level, the master suite enjoys its own private deck, capturing the elevated outlook and morning sun.
Skylights have been thoughtfully integrated throughout the home to bring natural light into the rear spaces, ensuring even the deepest parts of the floor plan feel light and welcoming.
This project successfully balances architectural form and site function, delivering a home that feels grounded in its environment while taking full advantage of the views and lifestyle offered by its hilltop location.
